Q: How do I order online ? What payment options are available ?
Please see Ordering Help and About SSL and Secure Ordering. Payment options are summarized here and in the next FAQ question.

Q: I am reluctant to use my credit card online, can I just phone you the order?
Certainly. We understand hesitancy to entrust credit card information to websites so we offer several options. You can either print out one of our order forms and send it in via post or mail but you'll probably find it easier to just submit an order online, choosing Phone or FAX on the Payment Information section of the ordering process. Once you submit the order, we'll have the address and selection details and you can call or FAX the payment details to us separately.

If you choose to FAX the order in, you'll find that you have an opportunity to print out a clear, FAX-able copy of your order during the online order submission process (step 5). You can fill in your payment information, then FAX it in.

Q: I can't order online, or don't want to. How else can I order?
Anytime you have trouble ordering through the site, or just wish to submit orders without using it, you can use our downloadable catalogues or order catalogues, then use our printable order forms to submit orders via phone or FAX.

If you are having problems with our site, please feel free to contact us for assistance.

Q: Are prices listed in Canadian or USA dollars?
Our policy is that all US shipments are to be paid in U.S. funds. This helps to cover the extra cost of inspection and shipping across the border. Orders shipped to Canadian customers are to be paid in Canadian dollars.

This means that the prices quoted on the site are to be taken as-is for the amount in US or Cdn dollars, depending upon where they are to be shipped.

As an example, an order listed as $50 will cost $50 US if shipped to the USA or $50 Cdn if shipped within Canada or picked up.

For countries other than Canada or the USA, prices are also in US dollars.

Q: Why does your order shipping information ask for my Tax ID or Social Security Number?
For orders being shipped into the USA, US Customs declarations now requires an SSN (US Social Security Number) or IRS ID number for commercial orders and for any orders over $2000 US.

If your order is non-commercial and is under that amount, you do not need to provide either number when ordering.

If your order is not shipping to the USA, you do not need to fill in that field.

Hortico does not use this information for any purpose other than for the customs forms and we do not give the information to others. The number will be stored securely in our website's database when you submit your order. It is automatically cleared from there upon receipt of your order by our office staff.

Q: Do you offer discounts if I order a lot of plants?
Yes. For more information see our ordering help table of Quantity Discounts.

Q: Can I find out the shipping costs before submitting an order?
Yes. For most cases of shipping within Canada or the USA you can either find your shipping cost from Shipping Costs and Details or you can make up your order via the shopping cart on the website and view the shipping cost quote before final order confirmation.

We do ship worldwide, though the costs to ship to countries other than Canada or the USA are usually quoted at time of shipping.

Q: How can I change an order I submitted?
We don't have the ability for customers to change submitted orders through the website, but we'd be glad to make adjustments if you contact our office staff by phone, email or FAX.

Q: What is 'Future Availability?'
Q: I am interested in certain plants and do not understand why shipping starts in October (or some other date).
In reference to our new 'future availability' note in our on-line ordering. This note is highlighted in green print as to when the plant becomes available. Why in October? We grow the roses here in our fields. This is a three-year process. We harvest our crop in the fall of each year.

We are now recording our budded (grafted) inventory a year earlier and have posted this on our website so that these roses may be ordered and reserved earlier! As the customer you have the option of indicating when you would like it to be shipped. Now you can order a rose, reserve it and have it shipped to you in the Spring.

For some more details on how this works in our ordering system, see Ordering Help: Date Available.

Note: We're working on improving the website to better show your options with ordering Future-Available items or mixed orders. In the meantime, after reading Ordering Help: Date Available, please feel free to make your preferences clear in the ordering comment field.

Q: Are your plants healthy?
Yes. Our repeat customers verify our plants to be vigorous and hardy. Our plants are virus free.

Please note that our Canadian-grown roses may be somewhat smaller than Texas or California plants. Our saleable plants are 2 year plants.

Q: How does Hortico propagate their roses?
For more information on this topic, please see Circumposing Roses ~ Also known as Rose Propagation.

Q: What rootstocks are used for Hortico's roses? How do I find ownroot roses?
For more information on this topic, please see Rose Roots.

First, please check and see if you have your browser set to reject cookies. The catalogue browsing and shopping cart will not work if cookies are disabled. If you are concerned about privacy issues, please see our Information Privacy Policy.

Some users have also had problems due to the cache settings on their browser software. If your browser is set to Verify Documents=Never, you will have problems. Our catalogue pages are generated dynamically as you move around the catalogue.

If you have checked these settings and you are still having problems with our site, please contact us for assistance.

Q: How do I download your catalogues ?
We have our catalogues available online in Adobe PDF format for easy access by our customers. You may download them or access them directly on the site using the free Adobe Acrobat Viewer. If you have it installed with the supporting browser plug-in, just clicking on the link should open the pdf file within your browser. If you would perfer to download the file, follow this procedure.

  5. Open the catalogue file with the Acrobat viewer.

Q: Can I order the printed catalogues through the website ?
Sure! Go to Ordering Catalogues and add the print catalogues you want to your shopping cart. Then submit an online order.

Q: When will the Perennials and Shrubs catalogues be online ?
Perennials are online now, though we're still adding information and photos.

It'll be a little while yet until the Flowering Shrubs, Evergreens and Small Trees Catalogue contents will be online, but it's on our list.

Meanwhile, please see Downloading Catalogues, and Flowering Shrubs, Evergreens and Small Trees Catalogue and Info Center.

Q: I'm trying to order a collection of roses, a video or a book and I keep getting a message that I need to order X plants minimum.
Update: There is no longer a 5 rose or perennial minimum on orders. Single-plant orders are just fine now.

Q: Why do the colors look different on my ___ machine?
Unfortunately, systems for representing colors exactly on computer screens vary quite a bit between different machines. There are also differences due to the hardware settings of individual monitors. This is a problem that is global to every website that has photos of anything color-related, including all sites with floral photos.

We attempt to take, scan and present accurate photos of our plants, but have no real control over the exact representations of the colors across different computers and monitors.
